Bodie, California is a ghost town and state park somewhere near Mono Lake, 26 miles off the nearest road to anywhere and within 13 miles (as the crow flies) from the Nevada border. It is quite literally in the middle of nowhere with empty desert all around. We found the town near sunset on an evening where thunder storms were moving all around us so the light was dramatic. The town is pretty much as when the last miner left in the 1960's but its heyday was in the 1890's when the town grew from 25 people to 10,000 in less than a year.
With the light coming low under the clouds and it being nearly sunset, I decided to play around with aging the photos. So few people where in the town when we were there that it was easy to find shots where it could be today or 50 years ago, nothing has changed.
This is main street looking north into nowhere. The road you can see in the distance is dirt and goes on for 13 miles before it reaches the next small town. However, travel on it is not advised. The sunlight was shining through rain that was not reaching the ground. I pushed the contrast and ended up with the aura effect that I liked.

The Bodie photos take me back in time to a forgotten place. The text adds important context.
The last photo is luminous and the one above it has every shade from the white reflective roof to the deep black of church siding.
Love the story about your cat and the photo and story about the shepherd and his dogs.
