Marcia's floor of many colors

Found at MOMA in NYC. Road Trip, anyone? Oh, yes, Marcia's color is RED!

Creating Art from Art can be a great challenge. Where is the line (no pun intended) between creating a document of an artist’s idea and creating something new of one’s own? Art changes as it moves from the artist’s studio to a public place. The public and the space will reinterpret the artist’s ideas and make them their own.

In creating this image, Marcia used two tools to make the image her own: time and selective composition. I would love to see the whole space. It is interesting to me that Marcia chose to include the straight stripes at the left. I probably would have shot the image vertically so as to include only the irregular stripes. As a result, my image probably wouldn’t have had enough space for the figures to rest comfortably in the busy image. By leaving the straight stripes, Marcia has given the people a counterpoint, a relief, someplace for them to grow into.

I like the positioning of the red figure. I also like the active motion of walking in the dynamic environment.

The only thing I would consider changing is the black space at the upper right. Could 1/2 of that be removed and still have enough space for the walkers?

From the introduction by Ann Temkin

“This exhibition features the work of forty-four artists who take a position in which art and life mingle rather than remain separate, and where beauty is found in the everyday rather than the ideal.”
