Jan 28 Whale Watch in San Diego

The gray whales are migrating from Alaska to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico.

In the Skagit Wednesday

The trumpeter swans are back feeding in the fields near LaConner.

This young bald eagle was having a leisurely afternoon checking out the territory from a branch overlooking the river.

Holy mackrel!

This photo was made at the Bait Shop on Shelter Island in San Diego on Thanksgiving Day. One of the fishermen on the pier below threw some fresh-caught mackrel up to the pelicans and the great blue heron on the roof of the bait shop. Everyone got lucky... including the photographer!

Thanksgiving Day at Famosa Slough San Diego

It was fish for dinner instead of turkey!

Hope you all had a great turkey day. I spent several hours at the Slough making photos of the birds. The day before I even photographed an American bittern (rare to see them here) with orange eyes (eyes are only orange when they're mating). The bittern posed on a fence for me for about 15 minutes!

Images of Indian Summer

For me, Indian Summer always means crisp sunny days with trees ablaze!...

and preparing for Halloween... The savvy crow conjures up images of witches and broomsticks and goblins and things that go bump in the night. Growing up in Wisconsin, we often wore our Halloween costumes OVER our snowsuits! These images were made in Issaquah this week.

It's all happening at the Slough 2

Did I mention I REALLY wish I had a 500mm lens? This is another shot at Famosa Slough... a 37-acre urban wetland/saltwater marsh. This Great Egret (Ardea alba) just caught a frog and was moving over nearer the reeds to have dinner. Would have been a great shot with BIG GLASS! Ha!

It's all happening at the Slough

This great blue heron took off right in front of me at Famosa Slough in San Diego just about sunset, but I was contending with shooting over the top of a chain link fence. This image is cropped,... Oh for a 500mm lens!

Flaming AND Early

This little flaming early bloomer is the other ballerina of the "tutu duo." My friend from Scotland is keeping her upright while the moms were trying to photograph the little girl in the pink tutu off to their right.

DBG Painting with Light class in Phoenix

Here's 1 of the 2 photos that worked the best during the Painting with Light class at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix. It was actually pitch dark out (9:00pm), we shot for a long exposure and during the exposure the instructor moved the flashlight over the cactus plants. I was amazed that the stars showed up so well.

Our fearless leader

Michele taught a couple classes on Avian Photography at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue recently. Here are a few photos from Saturday. As usual, she WOWED the group with her technical expertise and infinite knowledge of how to use all the different cameras... AND explained things so everyone could understand! It's a gift!
